Baseball Opens 2025 Campaign with 4-3 Setback to UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team opened the 2025 campaign with a 4-3 setback to UMass Boston on Friday afternoon at Monan Park.

In the loss, Bridgewater State graduate shortstop Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) became the Bears all-time leader in games played. Lindsay, who broke a tie with John Garabedian (2010-2013), was playing in his 161st career game in a BSU uniform.

The Beacons (2-0) plated four runs over the first three innings to open up a 4-3 lead.

UMass capitalized on three infield errors to push across unearned runs in each of the first two innings.

RBI singles by junior Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) extend the lead t0 4-0 in the bottom of the third.

Bridgewater State rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth.

The Bears loaded the bases with one out on singles by seniors Philip Messina (Dunkirk, N.Y.) and Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) sandwiched around a Danny Jasmin (Jr., East Meadow, N.Y.) walk. Messina scored on an RBI fielder's choice groundout and Ryan Flahery followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2. Junior Joshua Selander (Granby, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and senior Brendan Flaven (Taunton, Mass.) was plunked to forced in Lindsay with the third run of the frame.

UMB senior righthander Logan Lawrence (Taunton, Mass.) came out of the pen and ended the inning with a big strikeout.

Bridgewater loaded the bases in the sixth on a base hit by junior Riley Thornell (Wareham, Mass.) and walks to Jasmin and Lindsay but could not score. The Bears stranded a runner on second base in the seventh and two runners in the eighth.

Max Moss got the start on the hill for the Beacons but did not factor in the decision. Moss allowed three runs on five hits over 4 2.3 innings with a walk and four strikeouts. He also hit three batters.

Lawrence, freshman righty Connor Curtis (Mansfield, Mass.) and graduate lefthander Thomas Kierce (Cohasset, Mass.) combined for 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with Lawrence (1-0 ) picking up the win and Kierce notching the save.

The Bears used six different pitchers in a bullpen game with junior righthander Trey Yesu (Monson) getting the loss. Yesu (0-1) tossed the first two innings and allowed two unearned runs (due to the three infield errors) on two hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Freshman righthander Chase Beach (Orleans, Mass.), sophomore lefthander Michael Cobb (Waltham, Mass.), sophomore righty Patrick Chapin (Framingham, Mass.) and senior righty Nick Reiser (Nahant, Mass.) tossed four innings of scoreless relief giving up just one hit and two walks with three strikeouts. Beach was making his collegiate debut while Chapin was making his BSU debut.

Emerson went 3-for-5 to pace the BSU offense.

The Beacons had three players with multiple hits. Junior Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) went 3-for-4 and scored a run while Farnacci was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Sophomore Ryan Slack (Derby, Conn.) singled twice in four at bats.

The two teams combined for 17 hits, all singles.

The Bears are off until their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The eight-game venture begins with a doubleheader against Ursinus College on Saturday, March 8th starting at 3:00 PM.
