Baseball Swept by Oneonta to Close Out Florida Trip

COCOA, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Oneonta State University to close out their spring break trip to Cocoa, Florida on Thursday.

Bridgewater lost 4-2 in the opener of the twinbill and fell in 11 innings by a margin of 5-3 in game two. The Bears, who completed their Florida swing with a record of 5-4, will host Brandeis University next Wednesday afternoon at 3 PM.  

In the first game of the day, junior Brett Meservey (Catskill, NY) picked up his initial win of 2009 with six solid innings of work. Freshman Mike Center (Schenectady, NY) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record his third save of the trip.

Junior Sean O'Neill (Norwood, MA) took the loss on the mound for Bridgewater State.  O'Neill (0-1) allowed four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Senior center fielder J.T. Mooney (North Attleboro, MA) paced the BSC offensive attack as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the opener.

In the nightcap, junior Chris Brady (Mahopac, NY) had the game-winning hit for Oneonta as he drove in two runs with a two-out single in the top of the 11th inning.

Freshman Chris Smith (Colonie, NY) pitched four innings and struck out eight batters in relief to pick up the victory. Oneonta starter Dave Filak (Sco­tia, NY) pitched seven strong innings and recorded 11 strikeouts.

Senior Dave Liffers (Norwell, MA) pitched well for the Bears in game two.  Liffers allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings of work while striking out six.  He kept Oneonta off the scoreboard for the first five innings, but was touched for a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.

Senior right-hander Tim Bonham (Marshfield, MA) worked the next five innings and held the Red Dragons scoreless until Brady's game-winning two-run single in the 11th.  Bonham (1-1) allowed three hits, walked four and struck out five.

Senior first baseman David Kiloski (Lowell, MA) belted his second home run of the season, a two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning.  Kilsoki also doubled in game one of the twinbill. 

Junior third baseman Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA) went 3-for-5 at the plate in the nightcap.
