Panner Leads Volleyball at Hall of Fame Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball teams went 1-1 during the second and final day of the 2016 Hall of Fame Invitational hosted by Smith College and Amherst College on Saturday.

The Bears (10-16) dropped a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-16) decision to Hamilton College before earning a 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20) victory over host Smith.

BSU senior setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) was named to the All-Tournament Team. Panner notched 17 assists, two kills, an aced and eight digs in the loss to Hamilton, and 48 assists, three kills, three aces, 19 digs.

In four matches at the two-day invitational, Panner averaged 27.8 assists, 1.8 kills , 1.5 aces and 11.5 46 digs.

Sophomore middle blocker Erin Clifford (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with ten kills, a .318 hitting percentage and a solo block in the setback to the Continentals,. Clifford added nine kills and a pair of assisted blocks in the win over the Pioneers.

In the 3-1 victory against Smith, senior outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) filled the stat sheet with 16 kills, 14 digs, and ace and three blocks (one solo), while classmate Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) notched 12 kills, a match-high .367 hitting percentage and nine digs. Sophomore libero Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 20 digs and a pair of aces.

Tyros also registered 15 digs against Hamilton, while Maymon contributed four kills and 11 digs.

Maymon now has 995 digs as she closes in on her second career milestone. Maymon also recorded her 1,000th kill earlier this season. Former standouts Melissa Machado (2002-05) and Julie Clerc (2007-10) are the only two player in program history to reach the millennium milestone in both categories.

The schedule continues for the Bears on Tuesday night when they travel to Lasell College for a seven o'clock match with the Lasers.
