Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches at Hall of Fame Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team split a pair of matches during day one of the 2016 Hall of Fame Invitational on Friday evening at LeFrak Gymnasium on the campus of Amherst College.

The Bears posted a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) win over SUNY Canton before falling to host Amherst, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14).

In the 3-0 win over SUNY Canton, senior outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) recorded a match-best 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Maymon also added 11 digs, an ace and a pair of assisted blocks.

Sophomore Erin Clifford (Hanson, Mass.) checked in with seven kills and four blocks (two solo) and an ace, while senior setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) notched 27 assists, two aces and seven digs. Sophomore libero Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in with 17 digs.

The Bears finished with eight aces in the match led by three from sophomore defensive specialist Alyssa Kelley (Mansfield, Mass.).

Senior outside hitter Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, N.Y.) led the way for SUNY Canton with ten kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, N.Y.) added 25 assists, while freshman libero Jenna Roat (Penfield, N.Y.) registered a match-high 21 digs.

In BSU's 3-0 setback to Amherst, Clifford tallied seven kills and a pair of blocks (one solo), while senior outside hitter Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) added six kills and four digs. Panner contributed 19 assists and 12 digs, and Tyros finished with 14 digs.

Bridgewater struggled on the attack as well as in the serving game. The Bears posted a .120 hitting percentage, committed six serving errors and did not record an ace. Amherst finished with a .264 hitting percentage with six aces and three serving errors.

Senior outside hitter Nicole Gould (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior middle blocker Marialexa Natsis (Los Angeles, Calif.) paced the hosts with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while senior Kate Bress (Houston, Texas) and freshman Charlotte Duran (Newport Beach, Calif.) combined for 36 assists. Natsis also added a pair of aces and three assisted blocks.

Bridgewater State (9-15) will take on Hamilton College (10:00 AM) and Smith College (1:00 PM) on Saturday during the second and final day of the Hall of Fame Invitational. Both matches will take place at Smith.

Notes: With her 15 digs on the evening, Maymon increased her career total to 966.
