Volleyball Swept in Home Tri-Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches as the Bears hosted a tri-match with Westfield State University and the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Tinsley Center.

The Bears (7-14, 2-2 MASCAC) lost to Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Westfield State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 28-26), and bowed to non-conference foe Southern Maine, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21). In the other match of the day, Southern Maine blanked Westfield, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-12).

The Huskies, who swept the tri-match, improve to 13-9 on the season. The Owls see their record go to 11-13 overall and 4-1 in the MASCAC.

In the Bears' conference loss to Westfield, sophomore middle blocker Elizabeth Roberts (Swansea, Mass.) notched eight kills and a team-leading .286 hitting percentage. Senior setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) tallied 18 assists and three kills, while freshman defensive specialist Jordan Martin (Swansea, Mass.) recorded a season-high 16 digs. Sophomore Erin Clifford (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills, four solo blocks and one ace.

In the setback to Southern Maine, Clifford led the way with ten kills, a .316 hitting percentage and three aces. Panner contributed 25 assists, six kills and four digs, while freshman middle blocker Shannon Grindle (Halifax, Mass.) registered four kills, a .571 hitting percentage and one solo block.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday evening for a seven o'clock MASCAC match with the Buccaneers.
