Volleyball Falls to Amherst & Conn. College at JWU Wildcat Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches during day two of the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Saturday.

The Bears dropped a 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-16)) decision to Amherst College and fell to Connecticut College by a margin of 3-1 (25-10, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18). Bridgewater finished 0-4 at the season-opening tournament.

In the 3-0 loss to Amherst, senior outside hitter Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) recorded a team-best seven kills, while senior setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) notched 17 assists to go along with a pair of kills and an ace. Sophomore libero Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 16 digs, and senior outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) chipped in with five kills, seven digs and an ace. 

In the 3-1 setback to Conn. College, sophomore middle blocker Elizabeth Roberts (Swansea, Mass.) paced the Bears with eight kills, an ace and three assisted blocks. Roberts also posted a match-best .538 hitting percentage. 

Goncalves finished with ten kills, six digs and a pair of assisted block, while Panner recorded 32 assists, two kills and five digs. Maymon added seven kills, an ace and an assisted block, and Tyros notched 16 digs. 

Panner and Maymon were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

With her 29 kills over the two-day tournament, Maymon increased her career total to 984.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Framingham State University on Tuesday night to take on the Rams at seven. The match marks the MASCAC opener for both teams.
