Volleyball Downs Mass. Maritime on Senior Night

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-14) victory over visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest on Senior Night at the Tinsley Center.

The host Bears improve to 10-17 on the season and 3-2 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers slip to 4-18 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Senior outside hitter Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) paced the Bears with 11 kills, four aces and six digs, while senior middle hitter Julie Hutchins (Bellingham, Mass.) notched eight kills and a pair of solo blocks. Hutchins finished with an impressive .636 hitting percentage while Goncalves checked in with a .444 attacking mark.

Prior to the match, Goncalves and Hutchins were honored as the two seniors were playing in their final regular season home game.

Junior setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) added 29 assists, two aces and two kills for the hosts, while freshman Colleen Longley (North Granby, Conn.) came off the bench to record four aces and five digs. Freshman outside hitter Megan Tamasanis (South Easton, Mass.) also chipped in with four kills off the bench.

Senior outside hitter Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) led the way for the Buccaneers with eight kills and three digs. Junior setter Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) added nine assists, three digs and a kill.

The game also marked the return of form BSU volleyball standout, Melanie Appleman. Appleman who was a setter for the Bears from 2010 to 2013, is currently in her first season as the head coach for Mass. Maritime.

The Bears will compete in the Hall of Fame Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Buccaneers travel to Bay Path University on Saturday for an 11:00 AM match with the Wildcats.
