Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches at WCSU Tri-Match

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Western Connecticut State University and Wheaton College in a tri-match at Feldman Arena in Danbury, Connecticut.

The Bears (12-15) have lost four straight matches and six of their last seven.  The host Colonials swept the tri-match to improve to 20-5, while the Owls of Wheaton go to 14-11 with the split.

Western Connecticut 3, Bridgewater State 1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12)

In the day's first match, Bridgewater State took the first set 25-18, before Western found its rhythm, taking the next three by scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-12.  Senior Melanie Lombardi (Danbury, CT) and junior Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) led the Western attack with 11 kills each.  Junior Jenny Hogan (Franklin Square, NY) and freshman Danielle Kaminsky (Southington, CT) handed out 24 and 22 assists, respectively.  Wojtkiewicz led Western with 19 digs, while freshman Karissa Smith (Bristol, CT) added 18 digs and 10 kills.

For Bridgewater State, freshman Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, RI) led with 10 kills and 17 digs.  Freshman Charleyne Panner (Gilford, NH) had 38 assists, and senior Kristen Robillard (Swansea, MA) added 16 digs.  Freshman Clara Goncalves (Dennis, MA) and sophomore Julie Hutchins (Bellingham, MA) chipped in with nine kills, and eight kills, respectively.

Wheaton 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17)

In the second match of the day, Wheaton bested Bridgewater State in three straight sets for a 3-0 victory.  Leaders for Wheaton were sophomores Taylor Matook (Exeter, RI) and Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, NH) with six kills each.  Sophomore Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, CA) dished out 35 assists, and sophomore Robyn D'Agostino (Three Bridges, NJ) led the defensive effort with 16 digs.

For Bridgewater State, Maymon led in kills with six, Panner in assists with 25, and senior Danielle Dean (Gilford, NH) had 12 digs.  Panner also added a pair of kills and an ace.

Western Connecticut 3, Wheaton 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-21)

In the third and final match of the day, Western dominated play during the first two sets, winning 25-19 and 25-14.  In the third set, Western led 17-7, but Wheaton fought back to narrow the margin to three points before Western closed out the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

For Western, Smith led with 10 kills, Hogan had 19 assists, and Wojtkiewicz recorded 12 digs.

On the Wheaton side, Matook led with nine kills, Wilson had 26 assists and eight digs, and sophomore Elise Waelder (San Diego, CA) added eight digs.
