Volleyball Falls to Ramapo, 3-1, at Coast Guard Bear Classic

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Ramapo College in the opening match of the two-day Bear Classic hosted by Coast Guard Academy on Friday.

Bridgewater evens its' 2013 record at 11-11 with the loss as the Bears have dropped four of their last five matches.  Ramapo improves to 11-8 with its' fifth straight win.

Bridgewater jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 win in the opening set, but then dropped the next three, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-23.  The Bears struggled on the attack throughout the match committing 31 errors and posting just a .041 hitting percentage.  BSU piled up seven aces on the serve.

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) notched 12 kills and eight digs to lead the Bears while sophomore middle hitter Julie Hutchins (Bellingham, Mass.) recorded nine kills, three aces and three blocks (one solo).  Freshman setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) tallied 23 assists and five digs, and senior libero Kristen Robillard (Swansea, Mass.) added 12 digs and an ace.  Senior defensive specialist Danielle Dean (Gilford, N.H.) chipped in with five kills, three aces and 15 digs.

Sophomore setter Kaitlin Mac Iver (Hillsdale, N.J.) paced Ramapo with 39 assists, ten digs and a pair of aces, while junior middle blocker Sara Pendleton (Rutherford, N.J.) posted 19 kills and three blocks (one solo).  Freshman outside hitter Rachel Selmore (Morristown, N.J.) added 12 kills, 14 digs and three aces and sophomore outside hitter Cathryn Smart (Princeton Junction, N.J.) chipped in with nine kills, ten digs and two aces.

The tournament resumes for both teams on Saturday.  The Bears take on Worcester State University at two and host Coast Guard at four, while the Roadrunners battle Worcester at nine and Coast Guard at 11.
