Volleyball Edged by Regis in Tough Five-Set Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to visiting Regis College on Thursday evening at the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.  The host Bears slip to 3-3 with the setback, while the Pride improve to 3-5 on the young season.

The Bears took the first game, 26-24, but the Pride rebounded with a 25-22 decision in game two and a 25-20 win in the third game. After Bridgewater tied the match with a 25-16 victory in game four, Regis responded with a hard-fought 17-15 win in the deciding game five.

Junior outside hitter Sam Bliss (Framingham, Mass.) paced the Pride with 12 kills, 15 digs and one ace, while junior setter Marilia Ramos (Chimbote, Peru) notched 28 assists, nine digs and a pair of aces.  Senior libero Sara Gold (North Hollywood, Calif.) led all players with 48 digs.  Junior outside hitter Jackie Silver (West Hills, Calif.) added nine kills and six digs, while senior middle blocker Vanessa Noesi (Puerto Plata, D.R.) chipped in with seven kills and five blocks (one solo).

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, Mass.) led the way for Bridgewater State as she notched ten kills, 21 digs and a pair of aces. Senior libero Kristen Robillard (Swansea, Mass.)  finished with a team-best 28 digs to go along with two aces.  Senior middle hitter Michelle Atkins (Chelsea, Mass.) chipped in with four kills and five solo blocks, while senior right side hitter Emily Boyer (Stockbridge, Mass.) added eight kills.

Both teams struggled with their hitting as they combined to commit 53 attacking errors.  The two teams finished with seven aces apiece.  Bridgewater, however, recorded 12 serving errors and Regis finished with seven.

Bridgewater returns to the court on Friday and Saturday when the Bears compete at the Trinity & Wesleyan Tournament.  Regis is also in action this weekend as the Pride compete at the MIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
