Escalera Leads Women's Track & Field at Tufts Sunshine Classic

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) broke her own school record in the 200-meter dash and won two events to lead the Bridgewater State University women's outdoor track & field team on Saturday at the Tufts University Sunshine Class.

The Bears finished third in the team standings at the meet with 92 points. Host Tufts earned the meet title with 265 points while RPI (161 pts.) followed in second place.

Escalera captured top honors in the 200 with a time of 25.03 seconds as she eclipsed her previous BSU outdoor standard of 25.29 seconds set last season at the Springfield College Classic.

Escalara also placed first in the 100-meter dash with a finals and season-best time of 12.31 seconds.

Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.) outdistanced the field in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 11.50 inches (5.47m). McDonough added a first place performance in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.50 seconds.

Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) jumped five feet, 5.75 inches (1.67m) to win the high jump. Sands also finished eighth in the long jump (15'9.75"/4.82m).

Tristen Gomes (Middleboro, Mass.) placed second in the high jump (4'11.75"/1.52m), third in the triple jump (36'5.5"/11.11m) and fourth in the long jump (16'9.25"/5.11m). Gomes' marks in the high jump and long jump were personal bests.

Nicole Major (Andover, Mass.), Natalie Kalgren (Ayer, Mass.), Charlie Katz (West Yarmouth, Mass.) and Juliana Patrone (Wilmington, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' placewinners. Major placed third in the 800-meter run (2:31.25) while Kalgren was third in the javelin (98'3"/29.96m). Katz finished fourth in the hammer throw (126'3"/38.48m) and Patrone checked in at fourth in the high jump (4'9.75"/1.47m).

The BSU outdoor track & field teams travel to Westfield State University next Friday for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championships.
