Escalera Breaks 200 Mark to Lead BSU Women’s Track & Field at Springfield College Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) broke the school record in the 200-meter dash to lead the Bridgewater State University women's outdoor track & field team at the Springfield College Classic.

Escalera captured top honors in the 200 with a time of 25.29 seconds as she eclipsed the previous program outdoor mark of 25.34 seconds set by Traci Perry in 2017.

Escalera also placed first in the 100-meter dash with a finals time of 12.47 seconds, and ran a leg on the Bears' second place 4x100-meter relay squad along with classmate Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.), sophomore Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Maeve Grosschedl (Lakeville, Mass.).

McDonough added a first-place performance in the 100-meter hurdles with a finals time of 14.46 seconds.

Senior Maura Bruns (Franklin, Mass.) was the first to cross the finish line in the 10,000-meter run as she posted a time of 40:55.33.

Senior Lily Marra (Lakeville, Mass.) finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.85, while sophomore Lily Valcovic (East Taunton, Mass.) placed second in the 5,000-meter run as she crossed the line in 20 minutes, 9.80 seconds.

Junior Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) placed second in the high jump with a leap of five feet, 1.75 inches (1.57m). Sands also finished second in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles (15.39) but did not compete in the finals.

Graduate student Ashley Garvey (Woburn, Mass.) posted the second-best throw in the discus with a toss of 110 feet, seven inches (33.71m). Sophomore Tristen Gomes (Middleboro, Mass.) placed third in the triple jump (35'6.5"/10.83m) while graduate student Alexa Wilson (Centerville, Mass.) finished fourth in the long jump (16'9.75"/5.12m) and junior Juliana Patrone (Wilmington, Mass.) placed fourth in the high jump (4'11.75"/1.52m).

Escalera (100, 200), McDonough (100H), Sands (100H, HJ) and Gomes (TJ) all recorded Division III New England Championships qualifying performances. Escalera and McDonough also posted qualifying times for the NEICAAA Championships in the 200 and 100-meter hurdles, respectively.

The Bears will compete next Friday and Saturday at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College.
