Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Hosts Season-Opening BSU Bears Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's outdoor track & field team hosted the 2021 season-opening BSU Bears Invitational on Saturday morning at Swenson Field.

The non-scoring meet featured the Bears and fellow Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) schools Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University.

Senior Ashley Garvey (Woburn, Mass.) placed first in both the discus throw and the hammer. Garvey posted a mark of 111 feet, one inch (33.87m) in the discus and tossed the hammer 113 feet, six inches (34.59m).

The Bears added four wins in the track events. The BSU relay squad featuring sophomores Julie Glavin (Weymouth, Mass.) and Lily Marra (Lakeville, Mass.) and freshmen Nicole Major (Andover, Mass.) and Ashley Schepis (Norton, Mass.) captured top honors in the 4x400 with a time of 4:29.87.

Glavin also placed first in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:12.48, while sophomore Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.) won the 100-meter hurdles (15.80) and freshman Meg McCullough (Mattapoisett, Mass.) finished first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.00). McDonough is currently ranked 31st in all of Division III in the 100 hurdles.

Marra chipped in with a second place showing in the 400-meter dash (1:05.23), while McDonough placed second in long jump (15'0"/4.57m) and McCullough finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.59). The Bears also received second place performances from junior Julie Michaud (Halifax, Mass.) in the javelin (102'3"/31.18m) and sophomore Hailey Kilroy (Natick, Mass.) in the triple jump (28'9"/8.76m).

Following an off weekend, the Bears will compete at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State University on Saturday, April 10th.
