PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- Senior Rachael
Smith (Somerset, MA) won two events and classmate
Nicole Mauro (Mashpee, MA) captured the 5,000
meter title (18:49.97) to pace the Bridgewater State Women’s
Outdoor Track team’s sixth place finish at the New England
Alliance Championships hosted by Rhode Island College.
Southern Maine was the meet winner with 174 points while Eastern
Connecticut State (123) and Keene State (109) finished in second
and third, respectively. The Bears tallied 55 total team points.
BSC finished second among MASCAC schools with 86 points while
Westfield won the meet with 267 team points.
Smith bettered her time in last weeks Springfield Invitational in
the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.20) while taking the top spot in the
100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.01.
Mauro’s time in the 5,000 and her second place finish in the
1,500 (4:51.90) qualified her for contention in the Division III
New England Meet and the ECAC’s at the end of the month.
Freshman Deborah Solorzano (Woburn, MA) took home
third in the 10,000 (46:51.06) while classmate Amanda
Huaswirth (Methuen, MA) notched fourth in the 1,500
(5:04.05). Carissa Penney (Gardner, MA) also
crossed the line in 15th in the 800 (2:31.27).
In the field, first-year Brittany Paige
(Winthrop, MA) threw an eighth place finish in the shot put
(31-06.50) before registering 11th in the hammer throw
(107-11).
In relay action the 4 x 400 relay team of Smith, Hauswirth, Penney
and freshman Jessica Eidinger (Sutton, MA)
finished fourth with a time of 4:23.16.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when qualifying members
of the team will travel to Coast Guard to compete at the Division
III New England Championships. The three-day event will start on
Friday.
