BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- Senior classmates
Nicole Mauro (Mashpee, MA) and Rachael
Smith (Somerset, MA) each won two events and helped the
Bridgewater State Women’s Outdoor Track and Field team place
second at the MASCAC Championships hosted by Rhode Island College
on Saturday. Seven women and the 4 x 400 relay team each finished
with All-MASCAC honors.
Westfield State won the meet with 267 team points while BSC edged
out Salem State (86), Worcester State (83) and Fitchburg State (80)
for the second.
Mauro won titles in the 1500 (4:51.90) and 5000 (18:49.97) meter
runs while Smith took home first place finishes in the 100 (:16.01)
and 400 (1:05.20) meter hurdles. Freshman Deborah
Solorzano (Woburn, MA) also finished first in the 10,000
meter run (46:51.06).
The first place women’s 4 x 400 relay team of Smith,
Amanda Hauswirth (Methuen, MA), Carrissa
Penney (Gardner, MA) and Jessica Eidinger
(Sutton, MA) crossed the line with a time of 4:23.16.
Hauswirth registered second in the 1500 (5:04.05) while Penney and
Eidinger placed fourth (2:31.27) and fifth (2:33.39), respectively,
in the 800. Freshman Louise Cormerford (Billerica,
MA) tallied seventh in the 400 (1:11.59) while classmate
Katlyn Deschene (North Dartmouth, MA) took 11th in
the 200 (:30.37).
In the field, first year Brittany Paige
(Winthrop, MA) tossed a second place finish in the shot put
(31-06.50) and fourth in the Hammer Throw (107-11).
BSC will hit the track again on Saturday when qualifying members
of the team will travel to Coast Guard to compete at the Division
III New England Championships in New London, CT. The three-day
event will start on Thursday.
