SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --- Senior Rachael Smith (Somerset, MA) registered the top spots in the 400 (1:05.25) and 100 meter hurdles (:15.71) and fifth in the high jump (1.50m) to help pace the Bridgewater State women’s outdoor track team as the Bears continued their season at the Springfield Invitational this past Saturday.

The non scoring meet included Westfield, Worcester, Keene, and Eastern Connecticut State, all of whom BSC will see this week at the New England Alliance meet hosted by Rhode Island College.

Freshman Brittany Paige (Winthrop, MA) led the way in the field for the Bears as she finished second in the hammer throw (36.55) and fourth in the shot put (9.79)

Freshman Louise Cornerford (Billerica, MA) notched 10th in the 200 meter dash while sophomore Kerri Rooke (Springfield, MA) and Deborah Solorzano (Woburn, MA) each crossed the line 14th (5:20.22) and 18th (5:25.60) in the 1,500.

Freshmen classmates Amanda Hauswirth (Methuen, MA), Jessica Eidinger (Sutton, MA) and Cornerford each placed 10th (1:06.51), 11th (1:09.03), and 12th (1:11.49) in the 400.

In relay action, the Bridgewater State 4x 400 relay team took home sixth with a time of 4:41.21.

Smith’s leap in the high jump was good enough to qualify her for the New England Division III regional meet next week while her time in the 400 meter hurdles was good enough to punch her ticket to the New England All Division regionals in two weeks. Smith’s time in the 100 meter hurdles marked her personal best for the season in that event.

To date Smith and classmate Nicole Mauro (Medway, MA) have each qualified for the ECAC’s and the Division III regionals in the 100 meter hurdles and the 10,000, respectively.

Bridgewater State will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Rhode Island College for the New England Alliance meet and the MASCAC Championships. The first gun will fire at noon.
