Women's Tennis Downs Suffolk, 7-2

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over visiting Suffolk University on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 5-2 on the season with the win, while the Rams fall to 2-5. Bridgewater State is now 13-1 versus Suffolk since 2009 and 10-0 at home.

The Bears swept the three doubles matches and captured four of the six singles flights.

In doubles play, senior Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Meghan Lotti (Stoneham, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at the second flight, while sophomore Yasmine Queen (Waltham, Mass.) and freshman Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.) breezed to an 8-0 triumph at number three. The Bears' top pairing of junior Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.) and graduate Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I,) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 decision at number one.

Silveira (6-3, 6-4), Carter (6-1, 6-1), Lotti (6-1, 6-1) and Bettencourt (6-0, 6-0) all won in straight sets for the Bears in singles competition at the second, third, fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Lotti secured the decisive fifth point with her win at number five.

Senior Angela Gross (Albany, N.Y.) got the Rams on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set triumph at fourth singles. Senior Caren Urbano (Orlando, Fla.) won the match of the day as she battled back from a set down to record a 2-6, 7-6 (12-10), 10-6 decision at the top flight.

Both teams are off until next week. The Bears travel to Little East Conference (LEC) rival UMass Dartmouth on Monday to take on the Corsairs at three o'clock. The Rams head to Western New England University on Tuesday for a 3:30 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match with the Golden Bears.

Notes: Silveira's doubles win marked the 25th of her BSU career.
