Women's Tennis Opens Little East Play with 7-2 Win Over Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 7-2 Little East Conference (LEC) victory over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex.

The Bears improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Little East, while the Huskies fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Bridgewater captured two of the three doubles matches as well as five of the six singles flights.

Senior Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Meghan Lotti (Stoneham, Mass.) cruised to an 8-1 win at second doubles for the Bears while sophomore Yasmine Queen (Waltham, Mass.) and freshman Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.) teamed up for an 8-4 triumph at number three.

Carter added a 6-2, 6-2 victory in singles play at the third flight. Queen (6-3, 6-2), Lotti (6-0, 6-0) and Bettencourt (6-1, 6-1) also won in straight sets at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Bettencourt remains unbeaten in singles play on the season with a perfect 3-0 record.

BSU junior Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.) won the battle of the top-flight singles players with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Curry College on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:30 match with the Colonels. The Huskies head to Thomas College on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Terries at four.
