Women's Tennis Rallies for 5-4 Win Over Eastern Nazarene

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team edged visiting Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while the Lions fall to 1-1.

Bridewater State sweept the three doubles flights to jump out to a commanding 3-0 lead. Junior Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.) and graduate Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) teamed up for an 8-6 win at the top doubles flight, while sophomore Yasmine Queen (Waltham, Mass.) and freshman Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.) posted an 8-5 decision at number three. Senior Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Meghan Lotti (Stoneham, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-7 victory at the second spot. The flight was decided in an 8-6 tie-breaker.

Junior Sofia Rojas (Medellin, Colombia), freshmen Pamela Gonzalez and Sara Poletto (Barquisimeto, Venezuela), and senior Katie Cawthorne (Norwell, Mass.) all won in straight sets as the visiting Lions captured each of the first four singles flights to pull ahead, 4-3.

Bettencourt notched a 6-4, 6-1 straight set victory at six singles to even the match at 4-4. Lotti then gave the Bears the dramatic 5-4 win with a 6-2, 7-5 straight set triumph at number five.

Bridgewater State opens Little East Conference (LEC) play on Saturday afternoon at one o'clock when the Bears welcome Rhode Island College to the Rosen Courts. Eastern Nazarene hosts Division II Assumption University on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30.
