Women's Tennis Falls to Regis in Season Opener, 5-4

WESTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team opened the 2023 season with a 5-4 setback to Regis College on Friday afternoon at the Regis Tennis Courts.

The match marked the season-opener for both teams.

The host Pride captured two of the three doubles flight while the two squads spit the six singles matches.

In doubles play, sophomore Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and junior Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-4 win at number one for the hosts, while junior Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) and senior Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) combined for an 8-5 victory at the second flight.

Sophomore Yasmine Queen (Waltham, Mass.) and freshman Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.) gave the Bears their lone doubles point with an 8-6 triumph at number three.

Bettencourt, who was making her collegiate debut, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 straight set win at number six singles to even the match at 2-2.

Straight set victories by Thompson at the top flight (6-1, 6-1) and senior Nora Connor (Peabody, Mass.) at number five (6-2, 6-0) gave the Pride a two-point cushion at 4-2.

Graduate student Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) answered for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-1 straight set decision at second singles to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Lopez then secured the decisive fifth-point for Regis with a 6-0, 6-4 straight set win at the fourth spot.

Senior Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for Bridgewater State as she battled to a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 triumph at number three.

In upcoming action, the Pride (1-0) travel to Roger Williams University on Thursday (Sept. 7) afternoon to take on the Hawks at four o'clock. The Bears (0-1) entertain Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday (Sept. 5) afternoon at 3:30.
