Angelique Gray Named Little East Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman Angelique Gray has been selected as the Little East Conference (LEC) Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week.

A native of Osterville, Massachusetts, Gray went 2-1 in both singles and doubles play in a 2-1 week for the Bears as she helped her squad capture a share of the Little East regular season crown.

Gray posted a 6-0, 6-1 straight set win over her sixth flight opponent from Easter Nazarene College, and teamed with sophomore Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) for an 8-4 victory at second doubles in BSU's 7-2 win over the Lions. She also earned a 6-1, 6-4 decision at sixth singles and paired with Tarantino for an 8-1 triumph at third doubles as the Bears clinched the top seed in next week's Little East Tournament with an 8-1 win over UMass Boston.

Gray has produced a 10-4 record competing exclusively at #6 singles with a 7-1 conference mark in her first season of collegiate competition. The Bears' third flight doubles tandem of Gray and Tarantino currently sports an 11-5 record with an impressive 8-0 mark against Little East opponents.

The BSU women's tennis team wrapped up regular season play with an overall record of 9-5. Bridgewater finished in a tie for first place in the LEC standings with Rhode Island College as each team finished 7-1 in conference competition. The Bears, however, earned the top seed and a first round bye in next week's Little East Tournament by virtue of their head-to-head win over the Anchorwomen earlier this season.

Bridgewater will host a semifinal round match on Thursday afternoon at three against either #4 seed Plymouth State University or #5 Worcester State University.
