Women's Tennis Advances to Little East Title Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Top-seeded Bridgewater State University posted a 5-2 win over #5 Worcester State University in the semifinal round of the 2016 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears (10-5) advance to the tournament championship match for the eighth time in the last nine years. Bridgewater will host second-seeded Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon at one. The Lancers end the season with an overall record of 7-7.

The Bears led 2-1 after doubles play and then received straight set singles win from juniors Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and freshman Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) to clinch the victory.

Silva earned a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at the top singles flight, while Roman cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at the second spot. Gray secured the fifth and deciding point with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at number six.

Roman also teamed with classmate Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) for an 8-0 victory at second doubles, while Gray and sophomore Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) recorded an 8-4 win at the third doubles flight.

For the Lancers, junior Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) posted a 6-0, 6-2 straight set triumph at number five singles, while senior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) paired with sophomore Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) for an 8-6 win at first doubles.

The third and fourth singles flight were left unfinished as the match was stopped as soon as the Bears recorded the decisive fifth point.
