Women's Tennis Posts 8-1 Win Over Worcester State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team downed visiting Worcester State University, 8-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Courts.

The Bears improve to 7-3 on the season and 6-1 in the Little East as they remain atop the conference standings. The Lancers fall to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in LEC play.

Bridgewater swept all three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flights to record the win.

Juniors Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 victory at first doubles, while juniors Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) teamed for an 8-2 decision at the second flight and sophomore Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and freshman Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) posted an 8-2 triumph at number three.

Roman and Strickland both improve to 8-2 on the season in singles competition and a perfect 7-0 against Little East opponents.

In singles play, Silva battled back from a set down to record a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 win at the top flight. Roman, Scagnelli, Strickland and Gray all won in straight sets at the second, third, fourth and sixth flights, respectively.

Sophomore Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) tallied the lone point of the match for the Lancers at number five singles as she won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.

The Bears travel to non-conference foe Emerson College on Friday afternoon. The match is slated to get underway at 3:30. The Lancers host Little East foe Western Connecticut State University also on Friday at 3:30.
