Women's Tennis Hands RIC First Loss of the Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Bridgewater State junior Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) earned a straight set victory at No. 2 singles and paired with classmate Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles as Bridgewater State University defeated Rhode Island College, 5-3, in Little East Conference women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon.

RIC (8-1, 4-1 LEC) suffered its first setback of the season. The Bears (6-3, 5-1 LEC) won their fourth consecutive match, which have all been league victories.

In doubles action, the Anchorwomen's No. 1 pair of junior Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) and senior Julie Reddy (Smithfield, R.I.) edged BSU juniors Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.), 8-5.

At No. 2 doubles, Roman and Scagnelli downed the Anchorwomen duo of sophomore Katherine Braganca (Pawtucket, R.I.) and junior Isabella Romeo (Greenville, R.I.), 8-3.

At No. 3 doubles, BSU sophomore Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and freshman Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) defeated RIC junior Laura Nastasi (Smithville, N.J.) and senior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, R.I.), 8-4.

Reilly defeated Silva (6-2, 6-0) at No. 1 singles, while Roman downed Reddy (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 singles.

Strickland defeated Martin (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4 singles and Gray bested RIC freshman Chevell Burgess (Providence, R.I.) (6-3, 6-0) at No. 6 singles.

Romeo won (6-3, 4-6, 10-7) at No. 5 singles for the hosts, while the No. 3 singles match between Nastasi and Scagnelli went unfinished due to darkness.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action with a match at home against UMass Boston on Thursday at 3:30 PM. The Bears entertain conference Worcester State University on Thursday at 3:00 PM.
