Women's Tennis Downs Western Connecticut State, 7-2

DANBURY, Conn. -- The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Tuesday afternoon at the Westside Courts.

The Bears improve to 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Little East, while the host Colonials fall to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Bridgewater captured two of three doubles flights and five of six singles matches to record the win.

Juniors Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-0 triumph at the second doubles flight, while sophomore Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and freshman Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) earned an 8-3 victory at number three.

In singles play, Roman, junior Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.), Tarantino and Gray each won in straight sets at the second, fourth, fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Roman battled to a 7-6 decision in a second set that was settled with a 7-5 tie-breaker.

Scagnelli rounded out the Bears' singles winners as she rebounded from a set down at the third flight to win 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.

Freshman Emma Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) had a hand in each of the Colonials' two points. Chapman paired with junior Carole Allers (Wilton, Conn.) for an 8-1 decision at first doubles, and posted a 6-4, 6-2 straight set win at the top singles flight.

Both teams are back in action on Friday afternoon. The Bears travel to conference rival Salem State University, while the Colonials entertain non-conference foe Rutgers-Newark. Both matches start at 3:30.
