Women's Tennis Falls to Johnson & Wales, 8-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to visiting Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The visiting Wildcats (4-0) swept all three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flights to earn their fourth straight win to open the season.

JWU senior Morgan Thompson (Fargo, N.D.) and freshman Luiza Silva Simoes (Cuiaba, Brazil) posted an 8-3 triumph at first doubles. Thompson also won in straight sets at the top singles flight, 6-3, 6-2, while Simoes battled to a very tough 6-3, 7-6 straight set decision over BSU junior Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) at the third flight. The second set was decided with a 10-8 tie-breaker.

Freshman Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) picked up the Bears' lone point of the match as she won in straight sets at the sixth flight, 6-3, 6-4. Gray improved to 3-0 on the young season in singles play.

JWU freshman Nina Cohen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and sophomore Delaney Macchirole (Greenport, N.Y.) recorded an 8-4 triumph at second doubles, while freshmen Madison Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Holly Olson (Mukwonago, Wisc.) teamed up for an 8-0 victory at the third doubles spot.

Cohen, junior Taylor Klein (Johnson, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Torre (New Fairfield, Conn.) all won in straight sets at the second, fourth and fifth singles flights, respectively, to round out the scoring.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain the Rams of Suffolk University on Thursday afternoon at 3:30, while the Wildcats travel to Mount Ida College on Saturday for a noontime match with the Mustangs.
