Women's Tennis Falls to UMass Dartmouth in Little East Title Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Fourth seeded UMass Dartmouth upset #2 Bridgewater State University, 5-4, in the championship match of the 2015 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Corsairs, who captured their fifth tournament title and second in the current format, will now advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 2008.

UMass trailed 2-1 after doubles play. The Bears' first flight tandem of Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) posted an 8-2 win, while the second flight pairing of Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass.) earned a 9-8 decision with a 7-3 tie-breaker. The Corsairs' lone doubles point came from the duo of Kristen Rose (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and Mollie McCaffrey (Taunton, Mass.) who battled to an 8-4 victory at number three.

UMD captured four out of six singles matches to secure the tournament title with Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.) capping off the victory with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph at first singles. The Corsairs also received straight set singles wins from Kerry Magoon (Marshfield, Mass.) at the second flight (6-2, 6-4), Rose at number four (6-1, 6-0) and Samantha Rollings (Tiverton, R.I.) at the sixth flight (6-4, 6-1).

For the Bears, Anderson battled to a three set win at third singles, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, while Roman cruise to a 6-1, 6-3 straight set victory at the fifth flight.

The Corsairs improve to 11-6 with the victory. The Bears end the season with an overall mark of 10-6.

The NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament does not take place until next spring with first round play getting underway in mid-May. Tournament pairings will be announced at a later date.
