Women's Tennis Advances to Little East Title Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Second-seeded Bridgewater State University posted a 5-3 win over #3 Plymouth State University in the semifinal round of the 2015 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears (10-5) advance to the tournament championship match for the seventh time in the last eight years. Bridgewater will take on top-seeded Rhode Island College on Saturday at RIC. Match time has yet to be announced. The defending tournament champion Panthers end the season with an overall record of 9-6.

The Bears led 2-1 after doubles play and then received straight set singles win from freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomores Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) to earn the victory.

Anderson earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the third flight, while Roman cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five. Scagnelli secured the fifth and deciding point with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the fourth flight.

Scagnelli and Roman also teamed up for an 8-0 victory at third doubles, while senior captain Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass.) recorded an 8-4 win at the second doubles flight.

Lakes was leading her sixth flight singles match, 6-2, 5-4, when the match was stopped due to the Bears recording the fifth and deciding point.

For the Panthers, senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) posted a 6-1, 6-1 straight set triumph at number on singles, while sophomore Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) also won in straight sets at two singles, 6-1, 6-2. Zara Jakubas also paired with freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) for an 8-5 win at first doubles.
