Women's Tennis Edges UMass Dartmouth, 5-4

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team remained unbeaten in Little East Conference play as the Bears edged host UMass Dartmouth, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at the UMD Tennis Courts.

The visiting Bears improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the Little East, while the Corsairs slip to 4-5 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.

In match that lasted over four hours, Bridgewater held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Senior captain Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Rebecca Zeuschner (West Hartford, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-6 victory at second doubles, while the sophomore tandem of Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) posted an 8-4 win at the third flight.

Senior Maggie LeBrun (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and freshman Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.) earned a tough 9-7 decision at the top spot to give the Corsairs their lone doubles point.

Roman staled the Bears to a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set triumph at number six singles as she improved to 7-1 on the season and perfect 4-0 against Little East opponents.

Senior Kristen Rose (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Kerry Magoon (Marshfield, Mass.) posted straight set wins at the fourth and second flights, respectively, to even the score at 3-3.

BSU freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) captured a 6-2, 7-5 victory at third singles to put the Bears back on top, but Lahaie answered with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top flight to even the match at 4-4. Anderson also improved to 4-0 in Little East singles competition with her win.

Scagnelli won the match for the Bears with a 7-6, 6-1 triumph at the fifth flight with the first set being decided in a tie-breaker (8-6). Due to darkness setting in, the fifth singles match had to be moved to Westport Middle School during the second set in order for it to be completed.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater entertains non-conference foe Emerson College on Thursday afternoon at 3:30, while UMass hosts Little East rival UMass Boston on Thursday at three.
