Women's Tennis Earns 8-1 Little East Win over Western Connecticut

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team swept three doubles matches and took five of six singles flights en route to an 8-1 victory over Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Little East with their third straight win, while the visiting Colonials slip to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Bridgewater State received doubles wins from sophomore Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) at the top flight, senior Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Rebecca Zeuschner (West Hartford, Conn.) at the second spot, and the sophomore tandem of Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) at number three.

Scagnelli and Roman breezed to straight set victories at the fifth (6-0, 6-0) and sixth (6-0, 6-0) singles flights, respectively, to clinch the match. Zeuschner posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision at #4 singles, while Silva captured a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at the second flight. Anderson capped off the scoring for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the third spot.

In the top flight singles match, sophomore Lianne Maynard (Milford, Conn.) won 6-3, 6-4 for Western Connecticut's lone point of the afternoon.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday afternoon. The Bears travel to Roger Williams University for a four o'clock match with the Hawks, while the Colonials host SUNY Purchase also at four.
