Women's Tennis Battles to 5-4 Win over Johnson & Wales

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 5-4 non-conference victory over visiting Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The host Bears even their record at 2-2 with their second straight win. The Wildcats slip to 3-1 with their first loss of the season.

Bridgewater captured two out of three doubles matches to jump out to a 2-1 lead. The Bears' top doubles flight tandem of sophomore Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) posted an 8-3 victory, while sophomores Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) teamed for an 8-4 win at the third spot.

Senior Emily Glass (Sterling, Conn.) and freshman Delaney Macchirole (Greenport, N.Y.) won 8-6 at the second flight for the Wildcats' lone doubles point.

In singles play, Scagnelli and Roman each won in straight sets at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively, to stake the Bears to a 4-1 advantage. Senior Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) battled to a 7-5, 6-4 straight set triumph at the top spot to secure the fifth and deciding point.

Glass, sophomore Taylor Klein (Johnson, N.Y.) and freshman Lauren Torre (New Fairfield, Conn.) garnered singles wins for the visitors at the second, third and fourth flights, respectively. Torre battled back from a set down to win, 2-6, 7-5, 10-6.

Both teams will compete at the 30th Annual Newport Grass Court Doubles Tournament held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday beginning at one. Johnson & Wales also travels to UMass Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon for a 3:30 match with the Corsairs.
