Women's Tennis Edges Plymouth State, 5-4

HOLDERNESS, N.H. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team took two out of three doubles matches Saturday afternoon and held on to defeat defending champion Plymouth State University, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at the Holderness School Courts.

 BSU recorded its first win of the season, improving to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the LEC, while PSU suffered its third straight loss and fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) led the Bears with a victory at No. 3 singles after teaming with sophomore Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) for a key win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) was also a double-winner for the Bears, taking the clinching match at No. 6 singles after posting a win at No. 3 doubles with teammate Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) Sophomore Rebecca Zeuschner (West Hartford, Conn.) also won for BSU at No. 4 singles.

Trailing 2-1 after doubles, PSU captured victories at No.1 and No.2 singles by senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) and Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) to take a 3-2 lead. The Bears pulled out the team win with victories in the next three matches,

PSU's victory in doubles was by Sunny Jakubas and junior Rachel Morrissey (Belchertown, Mass.) in the No. 2 slot. Freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) rounded out the match with a win for PSU at No. 5 singles.

PSU returns to the courts Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. match at Castleton University, while BSU returns home to host Johnson & Wales on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
