Women's Tennis Improves to 16-0 with 7-2 Win over Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- The Colby-Sawyer College women's tennis team fell to the undefeated Bears of Bridgewater State University, 7-2, at Kelsey Courts on Monday afternoon.

The Bears improve to 16-0 and will host Endicott on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Colby-Sawyer drops to 10-8 and will play the winner of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) West Division on May 4 in the NEAC/NAC Crossover Championship in Latham, N.Y.

Colby-Sawyer received one point in doubles from the pairing of senior Elizabeth Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.) and junior Oxana Tkachenko (Lviv, Ukraine). Lincoln and Tkachenko earned an 8-6 decision at first doubles.

The Bears took the other two doubles points to take a 2-1 lead. The No. 2 team of junior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) and senior Jackie McGuirk (Raynham, Mass.) earned an 8-1 triumph. Bridgewater was then credited with a No. 3 doubles win by default.

Lincoln also was responsible for Colby-Sawyer's lone singles point. She picked up a tough 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 victory at the top flight.

McGuirk won her No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-1, while senior Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) each won in straight sets without dropping a game at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

Flynn turned in a 6-1, 6-0 match victory at the fifth flight, while the Chargers defaulted in the six slot.
