Women's Tennis Advances to LEC Title Match with 5-0 Win over Worcester

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team advanced to the Little East Conference Tournament championship game for the fourth straight season as the defending champion and top-seeded Bears posted a 5-0 semifinal win over #2 Worcester State University on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 13-0 on the season and will host #2 seed Rhode Island College in the tournament final on Saturday at noon.  RIC edged third-seeded UMass Dartmouth, 5-4, in the other semifinal matchup.  Worcester ends the season with a record of 8-8.

Bridgewater swept all three doubles flights to jump out to a 3-0 lead heading into single play.  Senior Jackie McGuirk (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) posted an 8-0 win at second doubles while the senior combination of Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) and Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) did the same at the top flight.  Sophomore Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 decision at number three.

Williamson breezed to a quick 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory at first singles to up the BSU advantage to 4-0, and Hopp gave Bridgewater the deciding fifth point with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at third singles.  The Bears were up a set in each of the remaining four matches that were left unfinished.  In postseason tournament play, a match is stopped once a team records five points.

Williamson is 12-1 in singles play on the year and an impressive 51-5 (.911) in her four-year career.  She has never lost to a Little East opponent in 38 career matches. Hopp also improved to 12-1 in singles play and is 29-3 (.906) all-time with an undefeated 20-0 record against LEC opponents.

The Bears matched the school mark of 13 straight wins originally set by the 1989 team which finished with a perfect 13-0 record.  They are also one shy of the program single-season mark of 14 wins (14-2) set by the 2010 squad.
