Women's Tennis Ties for Second at Grass Court Doubles Tournament

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team finished in a tie for second place at the 29th Annual Women's Grass Court Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina University at the Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Holy Cross captured the team title as the Crusaders reached the main draw finals of all three flights and won all three finals to finish with a maximum 12 points.  Three schools finished next with six points each, but Curry College emerged as the tournament runner-up with its head-to-head victories over Bridgewater State University and UMass Dartmouth.

Senior Jackie McGuirk (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) went 2-1 out of the Flight B Main Draw.  The duo posted an 8-4 victory over their opponents from host Salve Regina in the quarterfinals and then edged their opponents from Johnson & Wales University, 9-7, in the semifinals.  McGuirk and Flynn dropped an 8-5 decision to the Holy Cross tandem of Jackie Carroll and Molly Montgomery in the championship match.

The Bears doubles team of junior Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) and freshman Riley Palcic (Sun River, Ore.) won the Flight C Consolation.  After dropping their first match of the day,  Eramo and Palcic defeated their opponents from Johnson & Wales University, 8-6.  Eramo and Palcic then posted an 8-3 victory over the Colby-Sawyer team of Conley Dion and Ellen Graham in the consolation round final.

The BSU women's tennis team is back on the road on Tuesday afternoon as the Bears take on Johnson & Wales University at 3:30.
