Women's Tennis Opens 2013 Campaign with 6-3 Win at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass.--  The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team overcame a 2-1 deficit in doubles by winning five of the six singles matches as the Bears defeated the Fighting Scots of Gordon College, 6-3, at the Brigham Tennis Courts.

Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, the visiting Bears captured five of six singles flights to win the match and give Head Coach John Nestel a victory in his BSU coaching debut.

Senior Jackie McGuirk (Raynham, Mass.) also had an impressive debut for the Bears as she breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 win at second singles and teamed with junior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) for an 8-3 triumph at third doubles.  Flynn battled to a three-set win at fifth singles, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Rounding out the Bears' singles winners were senior Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) at the third flight (6-2, 7-5), sophomore Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) at number four (6-2, 6-1) and freshman Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.) at the sixth flight (7-5, 6-0).

Gordon's freshmen doubles team of Caroline Hall (Corona, Calif.) and Cindi Flynn (Sunset Beach, Calif.) posted an 8-1 decision at number one, while sophomores Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) paired up for an 8-4 win at the second flight.

Hall would stake the Fighting Scots to a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at first singles.

In upcoming action, the Bears host Suffolk University on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.  The Fighting Scots travel to Worcester State University on Saturday to take on the Lancers at noon.
