Women's Tennis Downs UMass Boston, 8-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team remained unbeaten in Little East Conference (LEC) play as the host Bears downed the Beacons of UMass Boston, 8-1, on Friday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater.

BSU improves to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Little East, while UMass slips to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Led by top flight singles and doubles player, sophomore Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.), the Bears swept the three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flights to come away with the win.  Williamson posted a 6-4, 6-0 straight set victory at number one singles and teamed with junior Ashley Pereira (Assonet, Mass.) for an 8-4 triumph at first doubles.  

Bridgewater also received straight set singles wins from senior Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, Mass.), junior Julie Kraby (Wrentham, Mass.), Pereira and freshman Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) at the second, third, fourth and sixth flights respectively.

Murphy and Kraby paired up for an 8-2 decision at second doubles, while Flynn and classmate Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) battled to an 8-6 victory at the third flight.

The Beacons' lone victory came at number five singles as junior Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, Mass.) defeated Eramo, 6-4, 6-2.

In five Little East matches this season, the Bears are 28-2 (.933) in singles competition and a perfect 15-0 in doubles play.

Bridgewater will host conference rival University of Southern Maine tomorrow at noon, while UMass entertains LEC foe Worcester State University on Tuesday afternoon at three.
