Providence, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women's tennis team suffered a 5-4 setback against Bridgewater State in a non-conference contest at the Moses Brown courts on Sunday afternoon.
Bridgewater State took the 2-1 lead after doubles action, including a marathon battle at the No. 2 spot which was won by the Bears team of senior Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and junior Julie Kraby (Wrentham, Mass.) by a score of 9-8, including a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker.
JWU responded in singles action and closed the gap to 4-3 with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No 1 singles by freshman Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) and a 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 win by freshman Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) at the No 2 spot. It would not be enough, however as junior Ashley Pereira (Assonet, Mass.) took a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win at No 4 singles which clinched the match for the visiting Bears.
Borr had two wins on the day for Johnson & Wales, including an impressive 8-1 victory with fellow rookie Darcy Predieri (Sudbury, Ohio) at No. 1 doubles. Kraby and freshman Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) each had two wins on the day for Bridgewater State.
With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 3-3 on the season while Bridgewater improves to 5-0 for the year.
