Women's Tennis Posts 6-3 Win Over Suffolk

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Led by the outstanding play of top flight singles and doubles player, Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.), the Bridgewater State University women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-3 victory over Suffolk University on Tuesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Courts in Bridgewater.

Williamson, the reigning Little East Conference Player of the Week, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles and teamed with junior Ashley Pereira (Assonet, Mass.) for an 8-5 triumph at number one doubles.

Bridgewater captured two of three doubles matches and four out of six singles flight to defeat the visiting Rams. The Bears led 2-1 after the doubles competition thanks to a hard-fought 9-8 (7-4 tie-break) win by the third flight freshman tandem of Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) and Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.).

Williamson quickly gave BSU a 3-1 lead with her straight set win in singles play.  Suffolk freshman Adrianna Garrett (Plymouth, Mass.) answered with a number three singles victory as she was leading 5-0 in the first set when her opponent was forced to retire.  Flynn upped the Bears' advantage to 4-2 with a quick 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the sixth spot, and senior Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, Mass.) clinched the victory as she was up a set (7-6) and ahead 2-0 in the second when her opponent was also forced to retire.

Bridgewater will travel to Worcester State University on Thursday afternoon (3:30) for a Little East Conference match with the Lancers.  Suffolk (1-1) heads to Springfield College next Tuesday to take on the Pride in a non-conference affair.
