Women's Tennis Downs Southern Maine, 6-3

GORHAM, Maine  -- The Bridgewater State University Bears overcame a 2-1 deficit, claiming victories in five of the six single matches, to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 6-3 in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Gorham High School Tennis Courts in Gorham, Maine.

With the win, the Bears remain undefeated and improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference.  With their second straight loss to a conference opponent, Southern Maine drops to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Little East.

Senior Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, Mass.) led the Bears from the top of the line up in singles action, earning a solid 6-0, 6-1 win at the first flight over Southern Maine freshman Rachel Miller (Portland, Maine).  Freshman Alison Joseph (Dartmouth, Mass.) also turned in a strong performance for the Bears gutting her way to a 7-6, 7-6 win at sixth singles over USM senior Erica Robertson (St. Albans, Vt.).

Sophomore Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine) scored the lone Southern Maine point in singles action with a gritty 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at fourth singles over Bears' sophomore Julie Kraby (Wrentham, Mass.). Kraby entered the match previously undefeated in singles action.

USM's Miller and freshman Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) and Robertson and freshman Sarah Moody (Scarborough, Maine) picked up wins at second and third doubles.   Miller and Boutin defeated Kraby and junior Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, Mass.) 8-6 at second doubles, while Robertson and Moody downed freshman Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) and sophomore Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) 9-7 at third doubles.

Southern Maine travels to Salem State on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Bridgewater State travels to Worcester State on Monday (3:30 p.m.).
