NEWPORT, R.I. – Led by the team of sophomore Lauren Hopp (Ludlow, Mass.) and freshman Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.), the Bridgewater State University women's tennis team tied for fourth place at the 26th annual Grass Court Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina University.

Bridgewater State University featured its first main draw finalists with Hopp and Williamson earning wins over Emmanuel and Holy Cross at Flight C.

On the site of the first United States Championships in 1881, Stonehill College women's tennis captured its first championship title at the tournament which took place at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

Stonehill advanced to the finals of all three flights and earned championship points from freshman Kaitlyn Martin and junior Leah White at Flight B and sophomores Paige Frost and Chelsea Haedrich at Flight C. In Flight A, Salve Regina freshman Ana Gwozdz (pronounced GUH-voosh) and senior Erin Phillips captured the individual championship with an 8-2 score in the final over Stonehill sophomore Jackie Harrow and senior Lindsay Herchel.

With eight individual match wins on the day, the Skyhawks totaled 16 points and edged runner-up Salve Regina which had 12 points and two finals appearances. Seahawk senior Valerie Leso paired with junior teammate Nichol Stevens for a finals appearance at Flight B.

Holy Cross enjoyed a pair of quarterfinal wins and two consolation victories to finish in third place with six points. Seven of the eight schools in the tournament placed a pair in either a main draw final or a consolation final.

Today was the first time since 2007 that the tournament played on the historic grass courts at the Newport Casino (rain had either postponed or re-located the previous two tournaments).
