Women's Tennis Drops 5-4 Decision to UMass Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team edged visiting Bridgewater State College, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Kelsey Grossmann (Holliston, MA) won the deciding match at number three singles as she defeated senior Catarina Rosa (Fall River, MA) in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, giving the Corsairs their fifth point and clinching the match.

The Bears won two of the three doubles matches, but junior Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA) had to retire from her number one singles match against junior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA) of the Corsairs, allowing UMD to tie the match at 2-2.

Junior Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA) defeated junior Rachel Elman (Rehoboth, MA) at number two singles, 6-4, 6-4, but junior Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, MA) of the Bears downed sophomore Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA) at number five, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Juliet Levangie (Middleboro, MA) defeated sophomore Julie Kraby (Wrentham. MA) at number six singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), setting up Grossman's decisive victory.

The Corsairs improved to 7-3 and 4-2 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Bears dropped to 9-2 and 4-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit MCLA Monday. BSC will host Curry Wednesday.
