Women's Tennis Wins Sixth Straight Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College women's tennis team won their sixth straight match as the Bears downed Worcester State College, 9-0, this afternoon from the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater.

The Bears, who won all six singles matches and all three doubles flights, remain undefeated on the season as they are now 6-0. Worcester drops to 1-4 with the loss.

The only other two instances when the BSC women's tennis team opened the season with six straight wins were in 1986 and 1989.  The 1986 team finished 13-1, while the '89 squad went undefeated with a perfect 13-0 mark.

Junior Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA) won the top flight singles match as she won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.  Donnelly also teamed with sophomore Jenna Nowlin (Bridgewater, MA) for an 8-3 triumph at first doubles.

Also posting singles victories were seniors Catarina Rosa (Fall River, MA) and Paulina Ucher (Webster, MA), junior Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, MA), and sophomores Julie Kraby (Wrentham, MA) and Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, MA). All six singles matches were won in straight sets.

Francis and freshman Ashley Pereira (Assonet, MA) posted an 8-1 win at second flight doubles, while Rosa teamed with freshman Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, MA) to come away with an 8-0 decision at the third flight.  Both Pereira and Hopp were making their collegiate tennis debuts.

BSC will try to make it seven consecutive wins as the Bears travel to Roger Williams University to take on the Hawks on Thursday at 3:30 PM.  Worcester hosts Nichols College on Thursday also at 3:30.
