WENHAM, MA -- The Bridgewater State College women's tennis teams opened the 2009 season with a convincing 8-1 victory over Gordon College on Thursday afternoon in Wenham, Mass.
The Bears (1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping all three of the doubles matches highlighted by an 8-3 win by the top doubles combination of juniors Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, MA).
BSC then proceeded to capture five of the six singles matches to come away with the easy 8-1 triumph. Francis, Rachel Elman (Rehoboth, MA), Catarina Rosa (Fall River, MA), Paulina Ucher (Webster, MA) and Julie Kraby (Wrentham, MA) all breezed to straight set wins in their respective flights.
Gordon's lone victory came at first singles as senior Katie Kirby (Orono, ME) outlasted Donnelly in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.
BSC will entertain non-conference foe Johnson & Wales University next Wednesday, September 9th at 3:30 PM.
