BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College women's tennis team saw their modest three-match winning streak come to an end as the Bears dropped a 5-3 decision to visiting Johnson &Wales University this afternoon from the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Courts in Bridgewater.
With the loss the Bears fall to 8-2 on the season, while Johnson & Wales improves to 4-2
The visiting Wildcats captured four of five singles matches and two of the three doubles flights to come away with the non-conference win. The top flight singles match was stopped in the tie-breaking third set due to rain.
Junior Erienne Gale (Ternecula, CA) paced the Wildcats as she won in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) at second flight singles and teamed with sophomore Melissa Engel (Traverse City, MI) for an 8-4 victory at first doubles.
Junior Catarina Rosa (Fall River, MA) led the way for Bridgewater State as she won the fourth flight singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Rosa also teamed up with senior Paula Araujo (Fall River, MA) for an 8-6 win at the third doubles spot.
Bridgewater State is back in action on Saturday at noon as the Bears host UMass Dartmouth in a key Little East Conference match. Both teams sit atop the Little East standings with identical 5-0 conference records. Johnson & Wales travels to Suffolk University on Saturday for a one o'clock Great Northeast Athletic Conference match with the Rams.
