BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College women's tennis team knocked off visiting Western Connecticut State University, 8-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) match this afternoon from the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Courts in Bridgewater.
The Bears improve to 8-1 on the season and remain undefeated in Little East play with a perfect 5-0 record. Western Connecticut falls to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the LEC.
BSC captured five of six singles matches and all three doubles flights to come away with the win. Sophomore Rachel Elman (Rehoboth, MA) won the battle of the top flight singles players as she defeated sophomore Justine Perna (Burlington, MA) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Junior Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA), the reigning Little East Player of the Week, paced the Bears once again as she earned a straight set win (6-4, 6-3) at second flight singles, while also partnering with sophomore Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, MA) for a tough 9-8 (7-5) victory at first doubles.
Western Connecticut State junior Alyssa Hoynack (Old Lyme, CT) picked up the Colonials' lone win of the day as she won in straight sets at third flight singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Juniors Catarina Rosa (Fall River, MA) and Paulina Ucher (Webster, MA), and sophomore Danielle Linscott (Uxbridge, MA) also won their respective singles matches for the Bears. Rosa won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, at the fourth flight, while Ucher also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, competing at the number five spot. Linscott claimed the victory at number six singles with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win.
Ucher and freshman Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, MA) picked up an 8-6 victory at second doubles, while Rosa and senior Paula Araujo (Fall River, MA) teamed up for an 8-3 win at the third doubles spot.
Bridgewater State is back in action on Saturday at noon as the Bears travel to Rhode Island College for a key Little East Conference match. Roger Williams hosts Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday at 1 PM.
