BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College women's tennis team opened the 2008 season with a convincing 8-1 victory over Regis College this afternoon from the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Courts in Bridgewater.
The win marked the first collegiate coaching victory for rookie head coach, Barry Gorman. Bridgewater (1-0) swept all three doubles flights and took five of six singles matches to come away with the win over the Pride (0-2).
Junior transfer Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA) paced the Bears with a straight set win (6-4, 6-0) at second flight singles, while also partnering with sophomore Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, MA) for an 8-1 victory at second doubles. Francis also earned a straight set win (6-1, 6-0) at third singles.
Sophomore Megan McCarthy (Norfolk, MA) picked up the lone victory for Regis as she won the battle of the top-flight singles players with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Juniors Catarina Rosa (Fall River, MA) and Paulina Ucher (Webster, MA) and sophomore Danielle Linscott (Uxbridge, MA) all breezed to straight set wins at fourth, fifth and sixth flight singles respectively. Ucher also teamed with sophomore Rachel Elman (Rehoboth, MA) for an 8-6 win at first double, while Rosa teamed with freshman Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, MA) for an 8-0 victory at third doubles.
Bridgewater State is back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Bears open the Little East Conference schedule on the road at Southern Maine. The match will get underway at 1 PM. Regis travels to Nichols College on Saturday for a noontime Commonwealth Coast Conference match against the Bison.
