Women's Swimming & Diving Posts 120-117 Win over UMass Dartmouth

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University swimming & diving teams split a dual meet with visiting UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday evening at the Dr. Mary Jo Moriarty Pool in Bridgewater.

The BSU women's team recorded a 120-117 victory over their counterparts from UMass, while the Corsairs came away with a 135-88 win in the men's results.

On the women's side, the Bears won six of 13 events and placed second in seven.  Bridgewater also posted six third place showings and six fourth place finishes.

The meet came down to the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay.  Trailing 115-105, the Bears placed first and second in the relay to accrue 15 points and the 120-117 victory.   

Individual event winners for the Bears included senior Chelsea Nolan (Lowell, Mass.) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:45.80), junior Kendra Perry (Middleboro, Mass.) in the 200 individual medley (2:29.57), senior Nelia Borden (Westport, Mass.) in the 100 freestyle (58.76) and junior Sarah Rechtiene (Southbury, Conn.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.80).

Rechtiene, Perry, senior Ashley Dunican (Bennington, Vt.) and sophomore Michaela Pereira (Rehoboth, Mass.) took top honors in the 200 medley relay (2:02.31) to open the meet.  Borden, Pereira, Rechtiene and junior Kristen Carey (East Taunton, Mass.) teamed up for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.86) to close it out.

On the men's side, UMass won ten events and placed second in seven others to capture the 135-88 win.

BSU junior John Holmes (Norwood, Mass.) was the Bears' lone individual event winner as he posted a time of 23.43 in the 50 freestyle.

Holmes, junior Sean Bruno (Easton, Mass.) and seniors Andrew Green (Middleboro, Mass.) and Erick DalMolin (Springfield, Mass.) added a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.21).

In upcoming action, the BSU swimming & diving teams will compete at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday.
