Women's Soccer Blanks Mass. Maritime, 7-0

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- The visiting Bridgewater State University women's soccer team cruised to a 7-0 shutout victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The Bears improve to 7-5 on the season and remain unbeaten in MASCAC play with a perfect 5-0 conference mark. The Buccaneers fall to 2-7-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the MASCAC. Bridgewater State is now 15-0 all-time versus the Buccaneers as the two teams have met every season since Mass. Maritime added women's soccer as a varsity sport in 2008.

Senior defender Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied two goals and two assists to lead the way for Bridgewater State.

Sophomore forward Olivia Robarge (Pepperell, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 17th minute with her third goal of the season. Robarge got behind a defender inside the 18 off a nice feed from graduate midfielder Kelly Powers (Stoneham, Mass.), cut to the middle and delivered a shot into the right side of the net.

Sophomore forward Skylar Conrad (Walpole, Mass.) scored on a one-timer following a crossing pass from Dewhurst in the 28th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. For Conrad, the goal marked her second of the 2023 campaign.

Dewhurst blasted a shot from the right side of the 18 inside the far post off a touch pass from sophomore defender Lauren Sellmayer (North Easton, Mass.) in the 35th minute to make it a 4-0 game.

Freshman midfielder Natalie Mattos (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 37th minute to cap off the first-half scoring. Mattos got behind the defense off a long thru-ball from Dewhurst and beat the netminder with a shot inside the left post.

An own goal made it a 5-0 game in the 61st minute.

Dewhurst blasted a shot from 22 yards out into the top right corner of the net off a restart in the 80th minute to extend the BSU lead to 6-0. Senior forward Stephanie Spear (Blackstone, Mass.) assisted on Dewhurst's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Sophomore forward Lexie Menezes (Rehoboth, Mass.) potted her first collegiate goal in the 88th minute to cap off the scoring. Menezes found the back of the net from just outside the top of the 18.

BSU sophomore goalkeeper Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) and junior netminder Tori Gemellaro (Wilmington, Mass.) combined on the shutout for the Bears. Levesque did not face a shot while Gemellaro made one save.

Sophomore keeper Brady Deschamps (Brewster, Mass.) was very busy between the pipes for the Buccaneers as she turned aside 19 shots.

Bridgewater State finished with a decided 38-4 shot advantage for the game as well as a 5-1 edge in corner kick attempts.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a seven o'clock game with the Corsairs. The Buccaneers entertain Fisher College on Wednesday night also at seven.
