Women's Soccer Blanks Fitchburg State, 2-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior defender Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored for the third straight game to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting Fitchburg State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Friday night at Mazzaferro Field.

The Bears improve to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in the MASCAC while the Falcons fall to 2-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. All three BSU wins this season have been shutouts.

Bridgewater now holds a 25-4-3 advantage in the all-time series which began in 1993, including a 16-2 mark at home.

Dewhurst broke a scoreless tie in the 59th minute with her team-leading third goal of the season. Off a touch pass from senior midfielder Makenna Lessard (East Bridgewater, Mass.), Dewhurst blasted a shot from 42 yards out which the Fitchburg goalkeeper was unable to handle cleanly near the right post and the ball rolled into the back of the net.

BSU sophomore forward Olivia Robarge (Pepperell, Mass.) added a late insurance marker as she buried a shot into the left side of the cage of a crossing pass from junior midfielder Sydney Sousa (Dartmouth, Mass.) with just 57 seconds showing on the scoreboard.

The Bears held a decided 22-5 shot advantage for the game as well as a 7-3 edge in corner kicks attempts.

BSU sophomore goaltender Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) made three saves to pick up her third win of the season. Levesque left the game briefly following a collision but returned to close out the win.

Freshman netminder Cassandra Pendleton (Ware, Mass.) played the first 67 ½ minutes in goal for the Falcons and turned aside six shots. Senior Skyla Vaudo (Burlington, Mass.) made one save in relief of Pendleton.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday evening. The Bears host the Hawks of Roger Williams University at seven o'clock while the Falcons travel to Wentworth for a six o'clock game with the Leopards.
